January 20, 2005 Beef and the Low Carb Lover MSNBC recently published a report highlighting the United States meat industry. It appears that with the onset of the ‘low carb’ diets American’s are adhering to, the meat marketplace is as busy as ever. When polled, it was found that 20% of the consumers agreed that the benefits of a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates influenced their decision to enjoy meat and fish. Sales of red meat have increased 18% in only three years and predications are that business will top $44 billion in 2004. Studies show that more people are eating red meat than before, yet the average American is actually consuming less of it. In 2003 it was determined that the typical customer ate 65-lbs of beef, while in the 70’s the average was about 90-lbs per individual. |
